A water test report can look like a spreadsheet had a baby with a science textbook. There are numbers, units, limits and abbreviations — and somewhere in there is the answer to whether your water is fine, fussy or actively plotting against your pipes. Here is the friendly translation.
pH: the personality test
pH tells you whether water is acidic, neutral or alkaline. Too low, and water may become corrosive. Too high, and it can taste bitter or contribute to scale. Most drinking water sits comfortably around 6.5 to 8.5, though the ideal depends on the full chemistry.
TDS: the dissolved-stuff counter
Total dissolved solids include minerals, salts and metals dissolved in the water. Low TDS is not automatically good and high TDS is not automatically dangerous, but it affects taste and can signal treatment needs. Reverse osmosis is often used when TDS must be reduced significantly.
Hardness: the scale maker
Hardness comes mostly from calcium and magnesium. It is not usually a health problem, but it is a domestic nuisance with a talent for ruining kettles, geysers, taps and anything that heats water. Softening or scale-control treatment can make a big difference.
Bacteria: the non-negotiable
Coliforms and E. coli are not “monitor and see” findings. If they appear in drinking water, stop using it for consumption, disinfect the system, identify the source and retest. UV, chlorination and proper storage hygiene can all form part of the solution.
The golden rule
Do not treat a single number in isolation. Water chemistry is a cast, not a solo act. The best recommendations come from reading the whole report, understanding the site and choosing treatment that solves the actual problem.
